About This Project
This has been a group research project for the class New Media Research Studio at New York University. Our group researched games that incorporate moral decisions into the structure of the game. Some games offer in-game rewards for different moral choices, and even lead the player to different endings depending on the way the player played the game. To narrow down our field of research, we focused on the game series Fable, Fallout, and Mass Effect.
We played through Mass Effect 2 to offer a personal experience to our research, and surveyed other players on specific elements of the game. We also conducted an ethnographic interview of gamers on gaming forums such as the Gamespot forums and the Steam forums to collect opinions and insights from a broader range of players of all three game series. Finally, we researched the meaning of morality and the psychological theory behind concepts of morality and ethics. When we synchronized this research, we came to conclusions that we hope players of this game site
will glean through their experience.
